Start your al fresco adventure here

As soon as the snow disappears for the year, Bostonians rush to shed extra layers, plan beach trips, and huddle on the first few restaurant patios to open for the season. Sure, those early patio days might necessitate a blanket or a heater, but there’s something special about eating outdoors, even when conditions aren’t perfect. Whether it’s those chilly early days of the season or the last good days of early fall, it’s a joy to eat outdoors when weather permits.

Here’s a round-up of Eater Boston’s outdoor dining maps and guides, along with other spring- and summer-friendly picks. Looking for a patio with a serious wine list or dollar oysters? A rooftop with a view? Look no further.

Now open with canned beers, light bites, and an herb garden

The Pour Yard opened at 210 Washington St. in Quincy on June 2, featuring the transformation of a former parking lot into an attractive enclosed patio. There’s indoor seating as well, but the star of this new spot is the outdoor dining and drinking space, decorated with an herb garden. (Those herbs show up on the cocktail list in various ways, such as in a blood orange gin and tonic with fresh rosemary.) The new venue is a sibling and neighbor of Cagney’s Pub.

Like canned beers? The Pour Yard’s beer selection is almost entirely canned (no bottles); there are also two draft lines. Plenty of local brews are on the list, from Barrel House Z in Weymouth, Castle Island in Norwood, Lord Hobo in Woburn, Far From the Tree Cider in Salem, and elsewhere.

As for the food, it’s meant to be a light, shareable menu that fits well with summertime al fresco drinking: lemongrass chicken potstickers, chips with a salsa flight, spicy herb-roasted nuts, seared ahi tuna BLT sliders, duck tacos with goat cheese, and the like. Patio-friendly desserts include “retro” ice cream cups and cookies.

There will also be wine, and visitors can bring their own food

Tap lines are in place and Trillium is ready to start pouring beers for visitors to Boston’s first open-air beer garden, located on the Rose Kennedy Greenway in the city’s downtown area. Trillium’s founders Esther and JC Tetreault hosted friends and family at the new outdoor spot yesterday and will soon open to the public, according to Boston Magazine, offering eight different tapped beers, plus wine from Westport Rivers.

The Fort Point brewery forged a partnership with the Greenway Conservancy to operate the beer garden throughout the summer and into October, as previously reported. The Tetreaults have a beer trailer set up on a brick patio near Rowes Wharf, with custom fencing, lighting, and counters for drink service, plus seating at picnic tables, benches, and high-top tables to accommodate roughly 250 people. There will be no food for sale, but visitors will be welcome to bring their own food, including from the extensive lineup of food trucks and carts that regularly set up shop on the Greenway.

The Trillium Garden will be open Wednesday through Friday from 4 to 10 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. More development remains in the pipeline for Trillium as the Tetreaults prepare to expand their presence in Fort Point with a full-service restaurant, brewery, and outdoor patio at a new location on Farnsworth Street.

Update, 3 p.m.: The Trillium Garden opens today, June 1, at 4 p.m.

The outdoor restaurant has ties to the Clam Box

A new seaside taco spot opened in Quincy last week, right next door to an iconic seafood shack. Baja Box has arrived on Wollaston Beach just in time for the summer months, and it’s a new sibling to the nearly 50-year-old Clam Box, whose owner, Brian Schwanke, has partnered with chef Tom Holloway (formerly of Rustic Kitchen) to bring this Mexican-inspired dining option to Quincy’s beachgoers.

Tacos figure prominently on the Baja Box menu, with a variety of fillings, including fried or grilled fish, shrimp, grilled chicken, pork carnitas, beef barbacoa, and chicken tinga. There are also nachos, chips and salsa, tortilla soup, and Mexican street corn. Baja Box is located at 793 Quincy Shore Dr., within the space that used to house The Ice Box, which served ice cream and frozen goods alongside The Clam Box. Honoring that legacy, Baja Box also serves frosty treats from Gifford’s Famous Ice Cream and Richie’s Italian Ice.

Customers can dine at picnic tables or stools on the dog-friendly outdoor patio. Baja Box operates from 12 p.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week.

Search Boston patios by a number of variables, including whether they’re heated, if dogs are welcome, and more

Updated frequently throughout the 2017 outdoor dining season, this table tracks the pertinent details of patios throughout the Boston area — whether they’re dog-friendly, if they have games, if they take reservations, if there are televisions, and more. (For best results, view this on a laptop or other screen larger than a mobile phone.)

Each column is alphabetically sortable, so you can quickly bring to the top just the patios that allow dogs, just the patios that are heated, etc. To get more specific, type a search term into the search bar right above the table (“cornhole,” for example).
