Updating The Eater Boston Heatmap, March 2014

View as Map

More often than not, tipsters, readers, friends and family of Eater have one question: Where should I eat right freaking now? Restaurant obsessives want to know what's new, what's hot, where to get the latest suckling pig or perfect shawarma. And while the Eater 38 is a crucial resource covering old standbys and neighborhood essentials across the city, it is not a chronicle of the 'it' places of the moment. Thus, we offer the Eater Heatmap, which will change continually to always highlight where the crowds are flocking to at the moment. Please note that the numbers are geographic; they are not rankings.

The Oleana empire has expanded to Somerville's Winter Hill in the form of Sarma, which is inspired by Turkish meyhane — restaurants serving meze, or small, shareable plates that highlight the seasons. Full of bright colors and the smell of spices, Sarma is bringing new life to a hidden corner not far from Union Square. [Photo: Rachel Leah Blumenthal]

3. A4 Pizza

445 Somerville Avenue
Somerville, MA 02143
Area Four has spawned an adorable pizza-centric Somerville outpost in the former space of the short-lived Bearded Pig in Union Square. The menu is divided into "pizza" and "not pizza," there are Hoodsies and lemon ice for dessert, and a video game emulator running on two televisions lets diners play all their childhood favorites. Starting at 11pm each night, half-priced cold slices are available. [Photo: Rachel Leah Blumenthal]

4. The Kirkland Tap & Trotter

Tony Maws' sequel to Craigie on Main was one of the most anticipated fall openings, and now that it has arrived, it's been constantly packed. It has a more casual vibe than Craigie with no fancy tasting menus, but Maws' intense interest in nose-to-tail eating remains. [Photo: Rachel Leah Blumenthal]

5. Alden & Harlow

The much-anticipated project from Russell House Tavern alum Michael Scelfo is finally here, and its opening week went off impressively well, from an already-popular "secret" burger to a lively bar scene. Try it right away before the lines are perpetually out the door. [Photo: Meg Jones Wall]

6. State Park

One Kendall Square
Cambridge, MA 02139
The self-proclaimed "obnoxious little sister" to Hungry Mother, State Park opened in December in the former Think Tank space in Kendall Square, featuring amusements like tabletop shuffleboard, a small menu of reasonably priced Southern snacks and light bites, and a beverage program that includes pitchers of cocktails. 7. Commonwealth

11 Broad Canal Way
Cambridge, MA 02142
Former Fenway Park executive chef Steve "Nookie" Postal has just opened his own place in Kendall Square, and it's not just a restaurant. There's a market, too, and both focus on seasonal goods from area farmers. [Photo: Meg Jones Wall]

8. Row 34

383 Congress st
Boston, MA 02210
The Island Creek Oyster Bar team has just opened Row 34, a more casual, neighborhood-oriented oyster bar in Fort Point. It's an homage to the turn of the nineteenth century, when oyster bars were on virtually every corner. The rest of the menu is an array of classic seafood dishes like lobster rolls and baked haddock. Acclaimed for Arrows and several other Maine restaurants, chefs Mark Gaier and Clark Frasier have just opened M.C. Spiedo at the Renaissance Boston Waterfront Hotel. Appropriate to the name of their host location, they pay homage to the Italian Renaissance with spit-roasted meats, an all-Italian wine list, and more. [Photo: Meg Jones Wall]

10. Mei Mei

506 Park Drive
Boston, MA 02215
At long last, here is the hotly anticipated (and Kickstarted) brick-and-mortar location of popular food truck Mei Mei Street Kitchen. Diners can still enjoy street food at the Audubon Circle location, but there are also more elaborate entrees and other benefits, like being able to sit comfortably while stuffing a Double Awesome in your face. 11. Fairsted Kitchen

Beacon St
Brookline, MA
From bottled, carbonated cocktails to USB outlets at the bar for phone-charging, Fairsted Kitchen wants, most of all, to be in service to the neighborhood. The menu ranges from snacks and small plates to giant options for the whole table to share, like a two-pound chateaubriand. The name and design are an homage to late landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, who had a Brookline estate called Fairsted. [Photo: Official Source]

12. Ribelle

1665 Beacon St
Brookline, MA
The hotly anticipated project from Tim Maslow (of Strip-T's fame) is now open in Brookline's Washington Square.
