When planning summer travel around New England, throw away all thoughts about traffic or car problems. Instead, start thinking about all the places you can grab doughnuts along the way, whether you’re packing light or packing for the week, because what’s better than a doughnut and iced coffee by the beach?

Beware, lots of these shops may close earlier than their posted hours if the last doughnut is sold, so get there early and remember: The early bird gets the doughnut.

Here are some of New England’s best doughnut shops that are within a comfortable day-tripping radius of Boston — about a two-hour drive or less. (Staying in or very near Boston? Try this doughnut map instead.)

1. Leavitt's Country Bakery

564 White Mountain Hwy
Conway, NH 03860

Visit Website

This mom-and-pop shack on the side of the road with yeasty doughnut delights and pies doesn’t seem like much visually, but the doughnuts and pastries make up for the lack of ambience. Only four people are allowed in the store at once, but the small shack has a huge parking lot — wait your turn in the car. Open seven days a week. (Note: After over four decades in business, the Leavitts sold the bakery to new owners in mid-2021.)

2. The Holy Donut

Portland, ME 04102

The Holy Donut popularized the potato doughnut, and the world is better for it. The now-closed flagship location in Old Port had lines spilling into the streets. Today you can find the Holy Donut on Park Avenue in Portland, as well as in Scarborough and Auburn, and a new location will open on Commercial Street in Old Port in summer 2021. Don’t miss the Maine blueberry jam doughnut.

Open mornings daily.

4. Donut Love

Exeter, NH 03833

Donut Love uses potatoes to create its hand-cut and frosted doughnuts. The result of everyone’s favorite starch in these halos? Extra crispy doughnuts. Open Wednesday through Sunday in North Hampton, Donut Love is the perfect companion for a trip along old Route One, while the Exeter location is worth a visit for “donuts after dark” Thursday through Saturday, offering doughnut desserts. From the apple to the maple cream, and even the chocolate sea salt, Donut Love’s doughnuts will please.

5. Brothers’ Brew Coffee Shop

27 Main St
Rockport, MA 01966

Unlike some of the other doughnut spots on this list, Brothers’ wants you to take a seat. The old fashioned counter is worth a day trip itself. Next door at Brackett’s, the doughnuts are utilized for sundaes and desserts. Try the buttercrunch, and be sure to follow Brothers’ Brew on Facebook, because the shop has been known to give out free doughnuts when the staff “miscalculates” the baking needs for the day.

6. Henry's Market

This is a full-service grocery with the most banging bakery around. If you are heading to Crane’s Beach or Manchester-by-the-Sea for the day, you can call ahead to pick up your doughnuts curbside. While anything with chocolate frosting is top-notch, Henry’s chocolate glazed is the perfect combination of cake, crunch, and airy lightness. The eclair is the length of a lower arm and a delight in every bite.

Grab one or two of Ziggy’s glazed or chocolate frosted and head over to Salem Willows Amusement Park. The arcade can transport you back to the 1970s along with the doughnuts — Ziggy’s has been around for 56 years. Open every day except Saturday.
