With Massachusetts under a stay-at-home advisory until at least April 7 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic — and likely longer, given that the need for social distancing is expected to go on for months, not weeks — residents are spending a lot more time cooking at home. Meanwhile, grocery shopping is getting infinitely harder as everyone tries to avoid crowds and essential items keep running out.
Many local restaurants do remain open for delivery and takeout — and restaurants need all the help they can get right now — but no one can eat every meal of the day from restaurants. Here’s a guide to groceries in and around Boston: which stores are offering senior shopping hours, what delivery services are available, which specialty restaurant suppliers are opening up to the general public, who offers meal kit delivery, and other pertinent details.

Current Grocery Store Requirements
Under measures announced by Gov. Charlie Baker on March 25, all grocery stores and pharmacies are now required to reserve at least one hour a day for people ages 60 and older to shop (something some stores had already begun to do).
Plus, all stores must have six-feet social distancing indicators in checkout lines.
Baker has also banned customers from bringing reusable bags to stores and pharmacies — and reversed all single-use plastic bag bans throughout the state. (139 cities and towns reportedly had bans in place.) Stores cannot charge for paper or plastic bags at this time.
Baker announced additional measures on April 8: Grocery stores must reduce their occupancy to 40 percent of their permitted occupancy (stores with occupancies of 25 or fewer people are excluded from this mandate); staff and customers are both part of the count. Store staff must monitor any lines that form outside for proper social distancing. The designation of one-way aisles is encouraged where possible.

Customers can get weekly or biweekly deliveries of a variety of produce boxes (the $32 “standard” box, for example, is meant to feed two or three people) with optional grocery add-on items available. The foodservice distributor is now offering meal kits to the general public for curbside pickup at the company’s warehouse on the Everett/Chelsea line. Options include a pizza kit, quesadilla kit, charcuterie and cheese board, and more, as well as butter, eggs, and ice cream. For each meal kit sold, the company will donate $4 to the Boston Restaurant Workers Relief Fund. Order by email or call (800) 462-0025.

The Watertown grocer is offering several pre-made boxes for parking lot pickup. Peruse the options and order online — there are two $50 boxes (one vegan) and one bigger $100 box available. The $50 non-vegan box contains bread, lots of fruit and vegetables, pasta, milk, and eggs. Order before 7 p.m. for next-day pickup (pickup times available between noon and 5 p.m. on weekdays); wait for an email confirmation with pickup details; and call when you arrive — the box will be placed in your car.

The Belmont shop sells a wide range of cheeses and meats, chocolates, condiments, and other items, as well as wine, beer, and spirits. Delivery is available (see above), as is curbside pickup for customers who have credit card info on file. Outdoor Markets
It’s a little bit easier to stay socially distanced from other shoppers — and enjoy some fresh air — at outdoor markets.
In addition to delivering via Mercato (see above), Boston Public Market also has several vendors outside on the plaza along Surface Road as of the week of March 23 for outdoor shopping. The market is posting scheduling and vendor updates on social media.

The Somerville retail and dining destination is opening its courtyard on specific days for Safe Supply, an outdoor grocery store (with strict social distancing measures in place) featuring several Bow Market vendors. (Keep an eye on Bow Market’s Eventbrite account or social media for future dates; it will typically happen once mid-week and on Saturdays and Sundays.) Shoppers are required to pre-register for a 30-minute shopping time via Eventbrite, and no cash will be accepted — all payment is done through no-contact credit card processing.

The Roche Bros. offshoot dedicates its first hour of business daily (7 a.m. to 8 a.m.) to seniors and shoppers with disabilities. All locations are currently open until 6 p.m. daily.

Senior hours are daily from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. The stores are currently open until 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 7 p.m. Sunday.

At each location, the first hour of every day is reserved for shoppers 60 and over as well as expectant mothers and shoppers with disabilities or weakened immune systems. Both Massachusetts locations currently open at 8 a.m.; Burlington closes at 8 p.m. daily and Cambridge closes at 9 p.m.

The current Trader Joe’s policy is to provide an additional line with expedited entry for senior customers from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily. Stay tuned for updates on how Massachusetts locations will abide by the new regulations. All locations are currently open until 7 p.m. daily.
