North Shore-Style Roast Beef and More Join the Lineup of Upcoming Food Hall

Smoke Shop BBQ, Cusser’s Roast Beef, and an Andover burger joint are the latest additions to Hub Hall’s vendor roster

Another day, another food hall update: The forthcoming Hub on Causeway development — opening by TD Garden and North Station — has announced more vendors for its food hall, Hub Hall, which is slated to open this winter. Cusser’s Roast Beef & Seafood, Smoke Shop BBQ, and Sauce Burgers will join the previously announced Monica’s Mercato, Sullivan’s Castle Island, Mike’s Pastry, and New Haven- and Roman-style pizza joint Apizza in the soon-to-be open West End food hall.

Roast beef

The original Cusser’s Roast Beef & Seafood location is the street-level takeout window beneath Mooncusser Fish House (304 Stuart St., Back Bay, Boston) that opened in May 2018. Chef Carolyn Johnson’s takeout window is a play on North Shore roast beef and seafood joints (think Nick’s in Beverly or Kelly’s on Revere Beach) where eaters can order a classic North Shore-style roast beef sandwich or a slightly done-up version with cheddar, pickled red onions, and the restaurant’s “Thoreau sauce,” which is slightly spicy. Seafood options, such as a lobster roll and fish and chips, are also available. (Customers can also eat inside, within the Moon Bar space under Mooncusser.)

Cusser’s in Back Bay is only open on weekdays from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., but the food hall kiosk version will be open for dinner and on weekends.

Barbecue

The Smoke Shop BBQ kiosk at Hub Hall will be the growing local chain’s fourth location. Chef and owner Andy Husbands currently operates locations in Kendall Square, Cambridge; Assembly Row, Somerville; and Boston’s Fort Point; and he may be planning yet another Cambridge location in Harvard Square.

The Smoke Shop BBQ is known for its decadent sides — French fries topped with pulled pork, mac and cheese topped with bacon, smoked pork chili topped with sour cream — and barbecue, especially its take on Texas-style brisket.

Burgers

Sauce is an Andover-based restaurant known for its burgers, wings, and ribs. Its owner, Spiros Pappadopoulos, is the brother-in-law of Boston chef and restaurateur Michael Schlow (of Tico, the now-defunct Radius and Via Matta, and more), and Schlow will consult on the Hub Hall location of Sauce, which will focus exclusively on burgers. Schlow is no stranger to food halls — he has a pizzeria and Italian kiosk inside the recently opened Time Out Market Boston in Fenway.

And that’s not all

But wait, there’s more. The overall Hub on Causeway development has a lot more going on than just its food hall. In addition to previously announced dining options (see below), it’s also getting a 15-screen movie theater. Los Angeles-based ArcLight Cinemas is behind the multiplex.

The Hub on Causeway location will be the company’s first in the northeast, and it will also include a 65-seat bar and lounge. Movie-goers will be able to snack on a variety of “elevated” theater fare — but more crucially will also be able to drink in the theater. It will be yet another addition to Boston’s “movie theaters that serve booze” scene.

The development is set to open this fall (with the Hub Hall portion following in the winter), and it will also include the previously announced restaurant from Guy Fieri, an event space, a music hall, and a 25,000-square-foot bar called Banners Kitchen & Tap equipped with Topgolf suites, 60 beers on tap, a television roughly the size of Rhode Island, and a cocktail list designed by local cocktail legend Jackson Cannon (Eastern Standard, the Hawthorne).

There’s more to come from this development, including more Hub Hall vendor announcements. Keep up to date with Boston’s developing food hall scene here, and track other exciting restaurant openings for the coming months here.
