One of New York City’s popular ice cream shops known for creative flavors and boozy floats will open in the Boston area this week. OddFellows Ice Cream Co. debuts Friday, August 9, at the Street Chestnut Hill.
OddFellows currently operates four locations in New York City, with a fifth on the way. Founders Mohan and Holiday Kumar, along with James Beard nominee Sam Mason (previously of Wylie Dufresne’s WD~50), have produced more than 400 flavors of ice cream, sorbet, and dairy-free desserts over the years, including cornbread, milk and cookies, caramelized white chocolate with toasted almonds, and Thai iced tea.
Chestnut Hill’s location will be the first OddFellows outside of New York, and it will sit below Legal Sea Foods in the Street complex. Like its siblings, it will serve rotating flavors of ice cream and sorbet, with frappes, sodas, banana splits, and sundaes, among other items. And like OddFellows’ location in the Dumbo section of Brooklyn, the Chestnut Hill shop will feature local beers and natural and organic wines to incorporate into ice cream combos like stout floats, lambrusco floats, and more, but the boozy items (along with beer and wine) won’t be available at first — look for them this fall.
Expect OddFellows in Chestnut Hill to feel a bit like a 1950s ice cream parlor, with cherry-red banquette seating and a bar, with custom art from New York-based illustrator Cerise Zelenetz. There will also be an outdoor patio.
OddFellows will join a packed food and beverage lineup at the Street, which is already home to Comella’s, Tender Greens, Chilacates, and Chef Ronsky’s Trattoria, among others, as well as a forthcoming project from Tim and Nancy Cushman of O Ya and Hojoko.
See below for a look at the opening menu for OddFellows, including the first in a series of limited edition collaborations with local chefs — basil chip by Karen Akunowicz of Fox and the Knife, one of the country’s best new restaurants.
OddFellows will be open from noon to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and noon to midnight Friday and Saturday.
