A familiar team will open a new taqueria Tuesday, August 6, near Boston University: Bergamot and Bisq co-owner Servio García, along with Bisq’s chef Alex Sáenz, have spent the last several months working on Taqueria el Barrio, which will serve up Northwest Mexican-style tacos, along with tortas, quesadillas, and more, at 1022 Commonwealth Ave., in Brookline.

In addition to opening a Bisq outpost in the new Time Out Market in Fenway in late June, the team has been busy developing a simple but powerful menu for Taqueria el Barrio, with flour tortillas made in-house, as well as corn tortillas made in Connecticut.
Customers will be able to choose from a selection of fillings for tacos, tortas, or quesadillas. Options include carnitas, carne asada, pastor, grilled chicken, chicharron (crispy pork belly), lengua (beef tongue), pescado, and vegetarian chorizo. Special taco combinations will be carmelo (a mix of carne asada, cheese, and beans) and combinada (carne asada and pastor together).
Taqueria el Barrio will also eventually offer specials.

García — a native of Puebla, Mexico, and a longtime veteran of the hospitality business in the Boston area — previously told Eater that he has wanted to open a Mexican restaurant for years. García and his team are now ready to deliver on that goal with Taqueria el Barrio. The restaurant incorporates colorful talavera tiles, a live-edge wood counter, and an exposed brick wall.
Taqueria el Barrio will operate seven days a week, from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m. on Sunday.
