A treasure trove of teas and treats arrived in Back Bay over the weekend. Egalitea Organic Cafe (248 Newbury St., Boston) — stylized as ÉgaliTea Organic Café — debuted Saturday, July 27, opening the doors to reveal a menu of hot and iced teas, tea lattes, and even tea ice cream flavors (debuting shortly — probably later this week, pending a final test by the city).
The subterranean cafe displays an array of loose-leaf teas, including green and white teas, oolong, black, pu’erh (a type of fermented tea from China), and assorted blends. Egalitea also has a heavy focus on environmental consciousness, striving “to serve foods and drinks that maximize the balance among people, social equity, and the environment,” according to its website.
In addition to teas, Egalitea serves cafe fare, including yogurt bowls, chia bowls, acai bowls, and oatmeal, all of which come with a variety of toppings like nuts, granola, fruit, seeds, and edible flowers. There’s a focus on organic ingredients, as well as fair trade and kosher choices of toppings that include nuts, fruits, and granola. There are also smoothies, bagels, and soups.
Inside, the cafe features exposed brick, black banquettes with low tables, and bar-height seating along a wall adjacent to the counter. Egalitea operates seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Update, 12 p.m.: This story has been updated to reflect that the ice cream won’t be available for a few more days; stay tuned. (Meanwhile, the cafe itself is open.)
