Airy popovers will grace the streets of Boston’s West End as Popover King (74 Canal St., Boston) opens in the neighborhood on Friday, March 15, near Haymarket and the Boston Public Market. The restaurant puts the classic New England pastry in the spotlight, alongside coffee, an English-style high tea service, and bistro service.
Owner Coco Cabuquit-Love created a menu that serves popovers in their purest form, as well as stuffed, with fillings ranging from cheese to lavender cream. On the heartier side, popovers appear served alongside lobster or marinated ribeye for entrees. Unfilled popover flavors include plain, garlic, cheese, onion, and sugar cinnamon, and the cafe is also selling breads, pastries, and sides.
Popover King has partnered with the North Shore’s Atomic Coffee Roasters for its coffee beverages. The bistro menu features snacks like cheese plates and popover chips with a trio of bisques, plus lobster salad, braised duck with vegetables, and salt pork with gravy and johnnycakes, or cornmeal pancakes.
Popover King is not the first popover purveyor in the neighborhood: The unrelated Popover Lady has been operating out of Boston Public Market since late 2017, with popover varieties ranging from asiago cheese to cinnamon sugar.
Popover King also adds to the growing list of recent openings in Boston’s West and North ends, including Alcove and the forthcoming Night Shift Brewing at Lovejoy Wharf, Tasty Burger at North Station, Kala Thai Cookery by Haymarket, and a new location of Beverly’s A&B Burgers in a building called the Beverly on Beverly Street.
Popover King opens Friday, March 15, and plans to hold a grand opening celebration on April 23. To start, the hours and menu will be limited; it will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily until the grand opening. Ultimately, it’ll be open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and 6 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, with weekday hours extending until midnight if there’s an event at TD Garden down the street. The restaurant is also raising investment funds to fuel the business in its early stages.
