A board game bar called Tavern of Tales (1478 Tremont St., Mission Hill, Boston, near the Roxbury Crossing T stop) is now open with limited hours; its grand opening will take place on Friday, December 6, after which it will operate on a regular schedule.

Tavern of Tales features an immersive board gaming experience, including games that feature sound effects, music, and narration. Owner Nicholas Chen is a sound designer by trade.

“Focusing on board games, we select games that lend themselves to enhancement through development of existing storylines or creating our own,” a Tavern of Tales employee told Eater previously. “So we won’t be offering every board game that’s out there in the world, but what we do offer will be enhanced. We will also stock a number of non-sound-enhanced games to be played in the bar area.”

According to the Tavern of Tales website, featured games include Eight Minute Empire, Forbidden Island, Mysterium, Robots on the Line, The Resistance, and Tokaido. Individual players and groups can reserve game time on the bar’s website.

Tavern of Tales offers a small but curated draft list featuring beers brewed in New England, along with wine and cocktails made with various cordials (the bar does not have a full liquor license.) Its food menu features a variety of tater tots, pizza, pretzel bites, a veggie plate, and charcuterie.

Tavern of Tales joins a small list of local board game-focused venues in the area, including Knight Moves, which has locations in Brookline and Somerville, and Adventure Pub in Arlington.

The bar will be open Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m., and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.
