A popular downtown Boston fast-casual Mediterranean mini-chain is now serving tacos. Falafel King has opened a taco stand called Taccos Arabas inside its Tremont Street location, which is located just across the street from the Boston Common.
Falafel King expanded to Tremont Street in early 2019, opening in a space formerly occupied by a Subway sandwich shop franchise. Falafel King also operates locations on Summer Street and Washington Street.
An employee at the Tremont Street location of Falafel King told Eater that the restaurant has tweaked its menu to include its own interpretation of the popular Mexican street food but noted that it would also still offer its full menu of Mediterranean staples, including falafel, shawarma, hummus, baba ghanoush, tabbouleh, and more.
The tacos are a fusion of Mediterranean and Mexican flavors, said the employee, and they are served three to an order. Each order is accompanied with a side of french fries and, keeping with the restaurant’s name, falafel.
Mediterranean-inspired tacos aren’t new — in general or in the Boston area. Usually known as tacos árabes, they can be traced to the Mexican city of Puebla, and East Boston’s popular Pueblan restaurant Angela’s Cafe serves them. And south of Boston, Sharon’s modern Israeli restaurant Simcha serves them on Tuesdays.
