The Trio Restaurant Group — which operates Publico Street Bistro & Garden, was the opening team behind Backyard Betty’s, and collaborated on Casa Caña — is expanding downtown. The group will open Bar Mercato inside the Hyatt Centric (68 Devonshire St., Boston), near Faneuil Hall, drawing inspiration from European food halls.

This means that the menu will jump around a bit, including items such as fried anchovies, charcuterie, mezze, souvlaki, and more.

A representative for the restaurant group confirmed the forthcoming project but was unable to provide further details at this time. However, the group has a reputation for designing nice-looking spots, so stay tuned to see how Bar Mercato shapes up.

Bar Mercato is not to be confused with Mercado Taco Bar, a forthcoming Mexican street food restaurant that’s supposed to be filling the space left vacant by Bertucci’s nearby (22 Merchants Row, Boston). Mercado Taco Bar was supposed to open in the summer of 2018; its current progress is unknown, but Eater has reached out to its owners and will update this story if new information becomes available. (Mercato and Mercado mean “market” in Italian and Spanish, respectively, so it’s not quite an uncommon word in restaurant names — there’s a Monica’s Mercato & Salumeria in Boston’s North End, for example — but a Bar Mercato and a Mercado Bar a four-minute walk apart might get confusing.)

Update, 2 p.m.: This piece has been updated to reflect that the new restaurant will be called Bar Mercato, not Mercato Kitchen & Bar, and to clarify that the restaurant group was the opening team behind Backyard Betty’s but is no longer involved.
