A popular Commonwealth Avenue bar near Boston University will soon take a journey back to its origins: Sunset Cantina (916 Commonwealth Ave.) will undergo renovations under the direction of the East Coast Tavern Group, making a return to its original menu — complete with the epic nachos — and margaritas on tap.
East Coast Tavern Group — which also runs Emmet’s Pub, Scholars, 6B Lounge, Carrie Nation, and Magnolia Smokehouse — will renovate the restaurant over the course of the next two months, according to Oran McGonagle, the group’s operations manager.
“We have hired the original team that opened the cantina,” he told Eater in an email. “We have a brand new draft system being installed and additions to the bar area to bring the beer and drink offerings back to its former glory with over a 100 tequilas on offer.”
The bar menu will also feature margaritas on tap, McGonagle said.
Renovations are set to start in five to six weeks; until then, the restaurant will continue operation as is. Once the restaurant closes for renovations, the group expects to complete the changes within two to three weeks.
In the meantime, East Coast Tavern Group is on the hunt for a new name for the restaurant and has tapped into its social media following for help. Anyone can propose a new name, and the winner will be invited to enjoy special perks at the grand reopening.
Along with Sunset Grill & Tap and Patron’s — both closed last December — Sunset Cantina was under the direction of parent company Sunset Partners Inc., which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in June 2017.
