Two bars popular with the Boston-area college contingent are going through some changes: Tavern in the Square in Allston is closed for renovations, while the Joshua Tree in Somerville’s Davis Square has apparently shuttered.

A representative with Tavern in the Square confirmed the Allston venue’s temporary closure with Eater (as did the paper covering the bar and restaurant’s windows).

“Tavern in the Square Allston is closed down for a complete redesign, from interior design to menu,” said the representative via email. “The new design includes an additional bar and a state of the art lighting and sound system. Our culinary team has been completely overhauled [and is] working on a new dinner menu.”

The representative also told Eater that Tavern in the Square Allston plans to reopen with an a la carte, music-themed weekend brunch, and that doors should open back up sometime in August. Follow along on Instagram for updates.

As for the Joshua Tree: Its doors closed around the end of June, and the team behind it recently requested a transfer of its liquor license to a business that will be called Elm Street Tap Room, located at the same address. Stay tuned for more information.
