At long last, Amorino opens its second regional location next week. The Paris-based gelato brand, locally operated by Lea Sasportes, adds a shop at 50 JFK St. in Cambridge next Wednesday, June 13, where it will serve a full lineup of gelato flavors, shaped into the brand’s signature rose.

The road to this opening has been two years in the making, Sasportes shared in an email. The JFK Street storefront is in a historic district and required coordination with the city for renovations and zoning changes. Amorino took over a space that was home to Berk’s Shoes for more than 30 years and previously housed a drugstore that sold ice cream, a legacy Sasportes expressed excitement in carrying forward.

“We hope to honor this history and be part of the local community,” she said.

The first local Amorino opened in Back Bay in March 2015, bearing the hallmark design of the chain, with stone walls and dark wood accents. Sasportes shared details of plans for Harvard Square with the Crimson in early 2017, as previously reported.

Amorino serves dozens of gelato flavors, ranging from chocolate, hazelnut, and dulce de leche to passionfruit, mango, coconut, and black currant. The shop also makes milkshakes, sorbet drinks, and granita, along with other treats such as macarons (filled with gelato, of course), waffles, crepes, and tortes.
