The time is nigh: The first ax-throwing bar in the immediate Boston area debuts this weekend, although without the bar part for now. (See update below.) Philadelphia-based chain Urban Axes comes to Somerville (2 Union Sq., Union Square), opening its doors for ax-throwing at 5 p.m. on Friday, December 7. Due to some construction delays, the bar portion of the venue will not be ready for opening weekend, giving ax-throwers the chance to learn the ropes before booze is added to the equation. (Stay tuned for updates on the bar’s progress.)

The company has been eyeing Massachusetts for expansion since at least mid-2017, confirming its Somerville plans almost a year ago. Located right in the heart of the Union Square neighborhood, the venue will offer reservations for groups and corporate events, some walk-in hours, and coaches onsite to provide instructions and keep an eye on ax-throwing sessions. There will also be recreational and competitive leagues which will be able to participate in competitions locally and beyond.

Urban Axes participants throw the axes — which are hatchets that weigh a pound and a half — at wooden targets at the end of a designated lane. Like darts, points are awarded for hitting certain points of the target.

Further outside of Boston, ax-throwing bars have sprung up in Agawam and Marlborough. Plus, Revolution Axe Throwing is still in the works in Everett’s “Fermentation District,” aiming to open at 69 Norman St., right by Night Shift Brewing, Bone Up Brewing, and Short Path Distillery.

Stay tuned for updates on the availability of alcohol at Urban Axes — or just go throw some axes this weekend.

Update, December 13: The Urban Axes bar opens today. The space is open at 11 a.m. for group reservations, and public walk-ins begin at 6 p.m. tonight. The opening menu is below, but note that not all of the food will be available right away — the full menu should be up and running during the week of Christmas.
