Iconic New York City bakery Magnolia is still making a foray into the Boston dining scene this year, as previously reported, although the opening timeline has been delayed until December. The bakery — which can attribute some of its fame to a little push from Sex and the City — will open at Faneuil Hall before the end of the year. Magnolia owner Steve Abrams is excited for the bakery’s newest venture.
“Faneuil Hall is one of the most iconic places in the United States,” he said. “When you get the opportunity to open a shop there, you can’t ignore it.” This forthcoming expansion is the culmination of at least seven years of Magnolia eyeing Boston.
Abrams said that Magnolia Boston will offer the same menu as its flagship location on Bleecker Street in New York — yes, even the banana pudding — and that he expects to be welcomed in Boston with open arms.
“It’s a natural fit for us,” Abrams explained. “New York and Boston are similar cities in a lot of ways. We feel a real connection to Boston.”
Aside from the well-known banana pudding and cupcakes, Magnolia also serves muffins, scones, icebox pies, mini cheesecakes, cookies, and other treats.
The Boston bakery will be a corporate location, not a franchise. Magnolia is also planning to open a bakery in the Union Station neighborhood of Washington, D.C., and there are existing locations in Chicago, Los Angeles, and across the globe, including a number of Middle Eastern locations, plus Korea, Japan, and Mexico.
