A bar in South Boston will close down this week after nearly two decades in business. The Playwright Bar, located at 658 E Broadway, will mark its last day on Sunday, August 6, according to Boston Restaurant Talk.
The bar opened in 2000, and now, after 17 years of serving pub-style food, it will say its final farewell to the neighborhood. The Playwright menu includes a selection of burgers with a build-your-own option, plus wings, tacos, sandwiches, nachos, seafood and meat entrees, and mac and cheese, along with beer, cocktails, and more.
The Playwright has been known to host neighborhood events ranging from viewing parties for major sports events to trivia, DJs, live music performances, and screenings of “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette.”
The Playwright’s departure leaves a vacancy on a busy stretch of East Broadway that’s also home to places like Roza Lyons, The Paramount, and a number of other restaurants and cafes. Stay tuned for further details on what will be taking over for The Playwright.
Update 8/11, 11 a.m.: A message from The Playwright indicates the bar is closed for renovations and will reopen with a new name and concept within four to five weeks.
