A Boston-born burrito chain will close down a location in Cambridge and will make way for a new restaurant that hails from south of the equator — and also serves burritos. Boloco will bid farewell to its storefront at 71 Mount Auburn St., and an Australian-based restaurant called Zambrero will take its place, according to Boston Restaurant Talk.
Zambrero specializes in Mexican cuisine, including burritos and bowls, tacos, quesadillas, and nachos, among other items. The restaurant first opened in Australia in 2005 and has since expanded to New Zealand, Ireland, and Thailand. Zambrero has a joint mission as a restaurant and a humanitarian organization and donates one plate of food to someone in need for every burrito or bowl sold. This is Zambrero’s first foray into the United States. Meanwhile, Boloco retains a number of locations around the Greater Boston area, plus restaurants in Hanover, NH and Warwick, RI.
Update, 7/3: Here’s a June 30 statement from Boloco CEO and co-founder John Pepper on the forthcoming closure, which will happen “a few weeks from now.”
