A world-famous street food cart and restaurant empire from New York is making good on past promises to expand north to Boston and has started laying the groundwork for its eventual arrival. The Halal Guys will be bringing their famous chicken, rice, falafel, and (of course) white and red hot sauces to New England, the restaurant group confirmed to Eater, though the specifics of exactly where and when the new restaurant or restaurants will open remains under wraps (pita pun intended). (See update below for more information on the location and opening timeline.)
The Halal Guys have secured a Boston-specific Instagram handle and are in the midst of large-scale growth that will elevate the brand to a global level. The restaurant is working with a franchise consulting firm called Fransmart to spur this latest phase of growth, which is slated to include six locations in the Boston area, as previously reported. The fledgling Instagram account promises that the restaurant is “coming soon” and instructs fans to keep an eye on a Facebook page for updates, but the provided Facebook page is currently a dead link.
The Halal Guys company has been around since 1990, when its three founders — Mohammed Abouelenein, Abdelbaset Elsayed, and Ahmed Elsaka — launched a food cart in New York City. Now, The Halal Guys have permanent restaurants all over New York and have expanded to California, Florida, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, and beyond, with more to come.
Update, 6/13/17: The company announced more details of the planned expansion today. The first Boston location will be in the CityPlace building (137 Stuart St.) in the Theatre District; it’s slated for a July opening. Coming up after that: locations in the Financial District, the West End (near TD Garden), Back Bay, Downtown Crossing, and Cambridge’s Porter Square. The restaurants will look similar to their New York counterparts. Keep an eye on Instagram and Facebook for more information.
