An alternative ice cream shop with three locations spread out around the city will add another location to its repertoire, at least through the end of the year. FoMu, which specializes in dairy-free ice cream and baked goods, has secured a storefront on Newbury Street in Back Bay, according to a post on Facebook. (Update: The new location is open as of April 28; see full update below for more information.)
In a follow-up comment, FoMu reveals that the location used to be home to clothing store Scoop NYC, which was at 177 Newbury St. That address is currently listed on FoMu’s website as a pop-up that will be open through the end of 2017, rather than a permanent location; stay tuned for more details. The main entrance to the garden-level storefront is accessible by a flight of steps, but there’s a lift in the rear.
With brick-and-mortar locations in Allston, the South End, and Jamaica Plain, not to mention periodic long-term pop-ups around town, FoMu will continue making those outside of Boston green with envy with this new location, if comments on the Facebook post are any indication. This is not the first time FoMu has served its wares in Back Bay: Last fall, it popped up for a few months at 144 Newbury St.
FoMu’s ice cream — which is typically made with a coconut milk base, although some limited-edition flavors have fruit, almond, or cashew bases — includes flavors such as chocolate pudding, fresh mint chunk, peanut butter mud pie, salted caramel, and lots more. Also on the menu: ice cream cakes, a variety of baked goods, MEM tea, and George Howell coffee. Everything at FoMu is vegan-friendly, and many products are suitable for people with other dietary restrictions as well; there are, for example, a variety of nut-free, gluten-free, and soy-free options.
Update, 4/28: The new location opened today at 177 Newbury St. and will remain open through the end of 2017 (11 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily). In addition to opening the new longterm pop-up, FoMu now has a “Seasonal Pint Club” for $160 a year (plus shipping, available nationwide), which includes four FoMu deliveries per year (March, June, September, December), each featuring three seasonal flavors and one signature flavor.
