The Wahlberg brothers will be a step closer to bringing their growing burger chain to their hometown next week when Dorchester breaks ground on a mixed-use development that will house a Wahlburgers restaurant.
Construction on the South Bay development at 101 Allstate Rd. officially begins on August 10 after a groundbreaking ceremony with Mayor Marty Walsh. What is now a vacant industrial property will become a 700,000-square-foot complex with stores, a movie theater, a hotel, and restaurants, including what is being described as a "flagship" Wahlburgers.
Mark, Donnie, and Paul Wahlberg signed a lease for the space in Dorchester earlier this year and will fill the 5,000 square feet with their menu of burgers, fries, sandwiches, "fluffanutta" desserts, and boozy milkshakes. After launching in Hingham in late 2013, the Wahlburgers brand (which includes a reality television show) now extends beyond Massachusetts to New York, Toronto, Orlando, and Las Vegas, and locations in D.C., Detroit, Philadelphia, and Dubai are in the works.
