When Al's Deli/WAN Convenience closed in May, there was some question over whether the change would be temporary, which had happened before. There's no question now, as a new restaurant specializing in Mexican-style Korean fare has moved in and could softly open next week, according to Boston Magazine.
Coreanos swiftly commandeered the space at 172 Brighton Ave., demolishing some of the existing interior and installing a new sign. The people behind the new restaurant are Jina Kim, formerly of Bibim, along with her husband Yongsik and son, Alex.
The food at Coreanos will pull together elements of both Mexican and Korean cuisine — a recently common sight in Allston with the opening of OliToki just down the road. The menu will include items like Korean tacos with spicy ginger slaw, kimchi papas fritas, and a kimchi quesadilla. The family also plans to serve traditional Korean dishes like bibimbap and Korean stews, and they will create some signature sauces for the restaurant.
The restaurant will seat 12 and will offer catering and delivery. While Coreanos could possibly have a soft opening next week, the target date for a full opening is mid-June.
