Double Chin — Chinatown’s newest spot for Spam & taro fries, mantou ice cream sandwiches, and over-the-top cube toast — is about to make your late-late nights a little bit better. Previously open until midnight daily, Double Chin will now stay open until 4 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
Run by sisters Gloria and Emily Chin, hence the name Double Chin, the restaurant opened in January at 86 Harrison Ave. and is inspired by the sisters’ reminiscences of "their favorite childhood foods," as previously reported.
The menu includes design-your-own noodle soups and stir-fries with various toppings, a number of sandwiches (which give the option to get scallion pancakes instead of bread), salads, snacks like veggie spring rolls and Craisin crab rangoon, and lots more. But the most distinctive item (and one of the most "instaworthy," as indicated by the menu) is the cube toast — a hollowed-out hunk of bread stuffed with ice cream and more, perfect for ultra-late-night dining. The Matcha Ma Call It, for example, is filled with green tea ice cream, red bean, fresh fruit, mochi, matcha milk, and Pocky.
"Bring a few friends to help, and extra insulin," wrote The Improper Bostonian critic MC Slim JB of the cube toast in a recent review of the restaurant. (His top picks included the cola wings, roast duck, and crunchy ramen salad with pork katsu.)
