The James Beard Foundation announced the 2016 Restaurant and Chef winners last night in Chicago, and Boston's own Joanne Chang was among those honored with a coveted award.
Chang — who started the ever-popular Flour Bakery + Cafe and who opened Myers and Chang with her husband Christopher Myers — won the Outstanding Baker award, which is given to someone who prepares "breads, pastries or desserts in a retail bakery, and who serves as a national standard-bearer of excellence."
And yeah, we'd call this sticky bun excellent.
"I want to thank my parents. Every year that I've been nominated they think I've won, so now I can tell them I actually won," Chang said following the announcement, according to Eater's live blog of the event.
She also posted a snippet from her speech on Instagram, where she thanked her husband: "I was so proud and happy to accept the Beard Award for my incredible team and for Christopher. I'm so grateful and lucky."
Chang was among a strong showing of women who took home awards last night, as the New York Times reported. That list included Suzanne Goin of Lucques in Los Angeles, Dahlia Narvaez, who won Outstanding Pastry Chef, and Leah Chase, 93, of Dooky Chase's Restaurant in New Orleans, who accepted a Lifetime Achievement award.
Chang is currently working on expanding her Flour empire and possibly opening a second restaurant with the Myers + Chang team.
