A staple of North Cambridge doughnuts and coffee shut down yesterday over an issue of rent payment, Cambridge Day reported. Verna's Coffee & Donut Shop, which has operated since 1951, was seized by the state, per the Constables Office of Massachusetts.
The phone at Verna's appears to be disconnected, and its website and Facebook page reflect no information about the closure. An order for the shop to close had been issued in Cambridge District Court on March 15 on account of rent nonpayment.
Verna's nearly closed in 2006, but instead changed hands and remained open.
Verna's was known for churning out delicious doughnuts in droves and selling out within hours. The Boston Globe named the North Cambridge donuts some of Boston's 13 greatest in March, just days before the apparent closing order. Further details on what will happen to the shop now were not immediately known Thursday, but any updates will be posted when they are made available.
