Formaggio Kitchen's popular sidewalk barbecue series — which takes place at the Cambridge location (244 Huron Ave.) — started up for the season on March 26, according to a newsletter from the shop. It begins at 11 a.m. each Saturday and lasts until the food runs out, generally around 2:30 or 3 p.m. It will run into October.
The team starts smoking meats each Thursday, including chicken, lamb, brisket, and pork shoulder. Small pre-orders can be placed until 4 p.m. on Thursday, but groups of six or more need to get their orders in by noon on Wednesday, and pre-ordered food is just picked up as-is inside the store, not grilled, so hot dogs, sausages, and other items that require grilling aren't available for pre-order. Deconstructed sandwiches, toppings, and sides are available.
The sidewalk barbecue menu includes sandwiches ($7-$9), including pulled lamb, beef brisket, and more; all-beef hot dogs (a quarter-pound Niman Ranch on brioche for $5 and a half-pound Pearl in a hollowed-out Iggy's baguette for $9); ribs (individual as well as half and whole racks, which go for $28); and some sides ($4/pint) and cornbread ($2/piece).
Line up early; Formaggio's barbecue is a time-honored tradition for many, and the crowds can get big.
