A popular watering hole on the Freedom Trail plans to expand its enterprise to include a coffee bar, according to Boston Restaurant Talk. Beantown Pub, a beacon of round light bulbs and flowing beer at 100 Tremont St., has petitioned the city to expand its space by 584 feet "to recapture [a] portion of the premises previously sublet to [a] retail coin shop," according to the licensing board hearing list.
In place of that coin shop, Beantown plans to open Ziggy's Coffee Bar, which has been in the works for almost a year and is now getting closer to becoming a reality. The addition of the coffee bar space will bring Beantown's occupancy from 249 to 275.
Ziggy's will have a separate entry from the pub during the day, but at night, the space will serve as additional bar seating. Ambitious Freedom Trail walkers will be able to swing by for a cup of coffee starting at 5:30 a.m. now, and Ziggy's will serve only food and non-alcoholic beverages before 8 a.m.
Currently, Beantown Pub is open from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m.
