A bao-centric restaurant in Cambridge has followed through on its promises to expand: Tom’s BaoBao debuted a new location over the weekend, opening up in Providence, RI at 326 Westminster St., serving its full lineup of steamed buns.
The Tom’s concept is simple. The menu consists entirely of bao, which come with a variety of fillings, from juicy pork to curry beef, chicken, sweet potato, and more, including seasonal offerings like lobster. There is also Chinese tea, coffee, juice, and soy milk.
Tom Tong, the founder of Tom’s BaoBao, has big plans for the concept. The Harvard Square location (84 Winthrop St.) and the Providence restaurant are the first two of the 20 to 30 Tom’s BaoBao locations slated to open over the course of the next five years. Tong has extensive experience with restaurant chains, which will help fuel this Tom’s BaoBao expansion: He is also behind Ganquishi, a Chinese bao chain with more than 200 locations, as previously reported.
