Back in December 2014, a restaurant called Sixth Gear appeared on a licensing hearing agenda, slated to open at 81 L Street in South Boston. The space was briefly home to Wolfie's Kitchen and Bar — and then, also briefly, Sauce Trattoria. According to that agenda, Sixth Gear wanted to take over the wine, malt, and liqueur license from Sauce and had plans to include a 10-seat bar.
It took the better part of year for things to get rolling, but Sixth Gear began hiring in fall 2015 and has announced today via Twitter that the opening date is set for January 22, 2016. Online reservations will become available later today, according to the tweet, and signage indicates that the full restaurant name is Sixth Gear Cask & Kitchen.
According to Sixth Gear's Twitter bio, the restaurant will feature "modern American fare" including "small shareable plates" and "large decadent entrees," along with "creative cocktail, wine, and beer lists." The team is still looking to make a few back-of-house hires.
