An iconic fixture of the South End's restaurant landscape officially reopens Friday, according to Dig Boston. Charlie's Sandwich Shoppe, known for attracting out-of-town bigwigs and local regulars alike, closed in the summer of 2014 after 87 years in business, but it will be given a second life thanks to a neighboring restaurant owner.
Evan Deluty, chef and owner of Stella Restaurant (1525 Washington St.), along with his wife Candice, purchased the restaurant after it closed with the intention of keeping the restaurant's magic alive.
Starting at 7 a.m. tomorrow, Boston Restaurant Talk notes, Charlie's will once again serve the South End.
In a previous interview with Dig, Deluty discussed how he used to visit the shop as a kid and later took his own kids there to share in his experience. He said he wanted "to preserve what the family has built," referring to the previous owners who bought the shop from Charlie in the 1940s.
