Southern Kin Cookhouse and Bar, the new Boston Nightlife Ventures concept at 500 Assembly Row in Somerville, is aiming for a winter opening, according to a rep, who shared some new details about the whiskey-focused beverage selection at the upcoming restaurant, overseen by BNV beverage director Michael Boughton. There will be over 100 American whiskeys available, including around 50 Kentucky bourbons, house-infused bourbons, and other American whiskeys in the rye, corn, oat, wheat, and single malt families. Whiskey flights will be available.
As for cocktails, there will be three categories. "Classic & Formidable" will continue the whiskey focus through variations on classic cocktails like the Old Fashioned, which will be cask-aged in-house; "Long & Short" will also focus on whiskey through drinks like juleps, punches, sours, flips, and more; and "Alternative Options" will — wait for it — provide alternatives to whiskey, featuring vodka, rum, gin, tequila, and more. Plus, there will be a sweet tea "service."
Through September, two of Southern Kin's sister restaurants, Tap Trailhouse and Wink & Nod, will each preview one cocktail from the new restaurant's list. Head to Tap Trailhouse to try the Daisy Cobbler — peach cobbler bourbon, Combier, house grenadine, lemon, and soda ($11). Wink & Nod will serve the Hot Maple Flip — habanero-maple bourbon, port, sugar Angostura, and egg ($11).
As previously reported, Southern Kin will seat just over 100 inside and 60 on a patio outside, and the menu will include dishes like country-fried steak and blackened gator tacos.
Boston Nightlife Ventures is also behind Griddler's Burgers + Dogs, which currently has two locations, and an upcoming restaurant called Certified Meatball Company, which was originally slated for Somerville's Davis Square, but a new location is currently being secured.
