Flat Black Coffee Company has opened in Long Wharf with a flourish of foamy caffeinated beverages. The Boston-based brewer first opened in Dorchester in 2003 and has since expanded to six stores, serving international, single-origin coffees.

The new espresso bar at 255 State St. opened on December 17. Flat Black does its own roasting and has retail and wholesale operations for its specialty coffee. It is the largest independently owned roaster in Boston, according to its website, and its micro-roasting technique is aimed at bringing out the rich flavors of each coffee.

Flat Black, named for Australia's version of an Americano, tips its hat to a deep appreciation for espresso Down Under. Founder David House, along with his partners Jennifer House (his wife) and Jeff Chatlos, oversees the roasting and operations of the six regional stores.
