Davis Square could see another new restaurant start construction soon. Soba Ya, LLC has applied for a license to operate a restaurant called Sugidama at 260 Elm St., according to the Somerville licensing commission.
Soba Ya filed for incorporation in March of this year and has proposed plans for Sugidama that indicate the restaurant will have 58 seats and will operate between 11 a.m. and 11 p.m. The space was previously used as a medical office. A plan for the layout can be previewed here.
The name "sugidama" reportedly refers to a cedar ball hung outside an establishment to indicate the start of a sake brewing. When the cedar ages and turns brown, it signifies the sake is ready.
