Starting October 19, Kaki Lima will serve up fine Indonesian fare out of KO Pies in the East Boston Shipyard (256 Marginal St.) Kaki Lima's creators are chef Retno Pratiwi, who is from Jakarta, and her husband Peter Gelling, who have held pop-up showcases of their food while working on plans for a regular restaurant.
Kaki Lima will operate in KO Pies on the Aussie-inspired restaurant's off days, Monday and Tuesday, with the usual beer and wine options available. This new venture, called KL@KO, will provide a regular schedule for Kaki Lima, which will continue to hold pop-up events around the city as a tester for future menu items for a possible permanent restaurant.
The menu is still being finalized, according to Pratiwi, but she and Gelling plan to use this opportunity at KO as a learning experience.
"The restaurant industry is not an easy one. So we've opted to take it slow, to make sure we are ready — that we have the right experience and the resources to help ensure success — before we open our own place," Gelling said in a release.
