It's been in the works for the better part of a year, and now the third Darwin's Ltd. may finally be on the verge of opening. "Late October, if all goes according to plan," the business posted on Facebook yesterday in response to a customer asking about the opening.

The company, which is more than 20 years old, has two locations elsewhere in Cambridge (Mt. Auburn Street and Cambridge Street), and another will open next year on Putnam Avenue, taking over the Petsi Pies space when the lease is up.

Darwin's Ltd. is perhaps known best for its sandwiches, which are named for streets in the neighborhood. The Mt. Auburn location, for example, serves The Fayerweather (turkey breast and Swiss cheese with sundried tomato-pesto-mayonnaise, lettuce, tomato), The Brattle (smoked salmon, cream cheese, cucumber, tomato, capers, onion), The Lakeview (tabouli and hummus with cucumber, green pepper, red onion, tomato, carrots, sprouts, herb vinaigrette), and more. Over on Cambridge Street, you'll find The Kirkland, The Broadway, and others. In addition to sandwiches, Darwin's serves coffee and tea, soups and salads, and assorted baked goods.
