Comedor to Bring Chilean Small Plates to Newton

Jakob White and Fernanda Tapia White, both alums of the chef de cuisine position at 51 Lincoln, are opening their own restaurant, Comedor, in Newton. It will serve American-Chilean small plates. (The name is Spanish for "dining room.") The duo has just launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise $25,000 for the final pieces of the puzzle — "plates, chairs, silverware, etc." Construction is already underway, and they're looking at a late summer or early fall opening.

The kitchen will be situated right at the front of the restaurant with a chef's bar wrapping around it for those who want to watch the food being prepared - "kind of like hibachi but without the onion volcano," they write on Kickstarter.

The Whites met six years ago at the Boston University culinary program and got married last year, and Comedor is meant to be "a collaboration of both of their cultural backgrounds," according to their Kickstarter campaign, "using Jake's creative approach to American cuisine and Fernanda's clever use of Chilean flavors and spices (merken, mapuche pepper, cumin, etc)."
