It's 6:30 a.m., and you could be walking through the door of Cafe Madeleine, opening for the first time at this very moment in the South End. In fact, it's the first of the most anticipated fall openings, sneaking in before fall has even begun. The French bakery, located in the former Amsterdam Cafe space on Columbus Avenue, offers plenty of baked goods, from pain au chocolate to fruit tarts — and of course, madeleines. There are also salads, sandwiches, and other light lunch and dinner options. Here's the full menu.
Frederic Robert is chef and owner of Cafe Madeleine. The James Beard Award winner used to be business partners with restaurateur Alain Ducasse and has worked his way through France and elsewhere, most recently serving as executive pastry chef at PB Boulangerie & Bistro in Wellfleet. Hana Quon, who was Robert's sous chef there, is now pastry chef here. Cafe Madeleine is open daily from 6:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.
