Denver-based burger chain Smashburger is opening its second Massachusetts location in Medford's Fells Plaza, reports Boston Restaurant Talk. There's currently a location in Natick, and at one point it looked like there would be one in Cambridge's Central Square as well, but that isn't happening. The chain has about 250 restaurants with 70-80 more on the way this year, "several" of which could be in Massachusetts, according to The Medford Transcript. The upcoming Medford one could open in spring 2015.
Smashburger's name refers to its practice of, well, smashing burgers. "They take a loosely packed meatball and they put it on a buttered grill," a representative of the restaurant told the Transcript. "They smash it for 10 seconds. That lets out the juices, so the burger can cook in its own juices."
