"Redbones Barbecue will not be moving forward with plans to open a location on Commercial Street in Malden," states Malden's official city website, crushing the dreams of fans who have been waiting for updates since the restaurant-and-nanobrewery project was first announced in May 2013. The statement continues: "Mayor Gary Christenson received notice from both the restaurant owner and the property owner that they could not reach an agreement as to specific lease terms and have thus ended their discussions...The Mayor said that he is extremely disappointed by the decision and added that his office and the Malden Redevelopment Authority hope to continue working with the Redbones owner to identify another location in the City for his operation."
The Somerville-based restaurant was slated to expand into the former Rosebud Farms grocery store space, and it would have been a little more elaborate than the original location, featuring a self-seating "picnic table hall" open interior with visible smokers (order at the counter and sit down), an outdoor beer garden, and a nano-brewery.
