Somerville's Union Square is getting an ice cream shop. Gracie's Ice Cream is "coming soon" to 22 Union Square, the former Sherman Market space, reports Universal Hub. In fact, the ice cream shop is part of the Sherman concept, according to this Facebook post from back in November.
Last summer, the market moved its operations into Sherman Cafe around the corner with the plan to keep both spaces and connect them through the middle of the building. Renovations have been underway for awhile in the market space.
When the market first opened in 2004, ice cream was served for a little while, but it didn't make sense at that point. "First, we just didn't have the space to do more than sell scoops (with no cones) and frappes," according to Facebook. "Second, at that time there was never too much happening in the evenings in Union Square, and few people buy ice cream in the mornings (though it happened from time to time!)" Now, evenings are livelier thanks to the opening of lots of new restaurants, and Sherman has more space. Picture this: "A small dedicated storefront with sidewalk space for a lot of outdoor seating is perfect for ice cream."
