Shuffleboard, Cornhole, and Pac-Man in Union Square

More news has emerged on Brass Union, the reinvention of Somerville's Precinct, which closed for renovations and a new concept back in February. According to a press release, the new restaurant (rather, "eatery and lounge experience") will open early next month, featuring two "distinct" but "synergetic" concepts. In the front, what used to be a dining room and bar will now be "a New York City-style tavern reminiscent of days of yore," complete with a 24-seat bar. In the back, what used to be another bar and a space for live music will now be a lounge area with a 30-seat bar, live deejays, a 14-foot shuffleboard court, and vintage tabletop PAC-MAN. The two sunken patios outside will remain in use — one for dining, and one for games like cornhole. Herbs and veggies will be grown around the border of the patios as well.

When Precinct closed, word was that the restaurant wanted to shift the focus from being a live music venue and bar to a restaurant with more serious attention paid to the food. To that end, Brass Union has brought in Chez Henri alum Jonathan Kopacz as executive chef. His menu will focus on American-style small plates. For drinks, there'll be cocktails on draft, house-made sodas, and 24 beers on tap. Paulo Pereira, an alum of Vine Brook Tavern and The Lansdowne Pub, is in charge of beverages.

Brass Union will be open from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Monday through Thursday, 2 p.m. to 2 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. on Sunday (with brunch served from 11 a.m. until 4 p.m.) Food will be available until midnight daily. Stay tuned for an opening date.
