Ashmont Grill and Tavolo owner Chris Douglass could be opening a new restaurant inside the "enormous" Roslindale Substation, according to Wicked Local West Roxbury, and construction could start this summer. Built in 1911, the substation, once home to streetcar machinery, has been empty and unused since 1971. It's part of a larger project to transform Roslindale Village's Washington Street. The restaurant would be on the first floor, which is 3,800 square feet and features high ceilings.
Ashmont Grill has been open since 2005, serving "modern tavern cuisine" in Dorchester's Peabody Square, and Tavolo opened as a "casual pizza joint" in 2008 before upping the ante two years later with a heavy focus on sourcing locally and making charcuterie, pastas, breads, and more in-house. Previously, Chris Douglass owned the now-defunct Icarus in the South End.
