The Merchant, an "American brasserie," opened over the weekend in Downtown Crossing, according to the restaurant's social media accounts. Sycamore co-owner Shane Smyth is a co-owner, and executive chef Matt Foley and sous chef Tim McQuinn are both Craigie on Main alums.
Located in the longtime space of the shuttered London Harness, a leather shop that apparently counted Benjamin Franklin among its early customers, The Merchant offers over 60 beers, plus wine (including three on tap) and cocktails. It's open for lunch, dinner, and late-night snacking. Most entrees are in the low-to-mid-$20s range, with dishes like crispy duck a l'orange ($23), pan-seared cod ($22), and pork two ways ($24). Kitchen hours are 11 a.m. until midnight from Sunday through Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. Thursday through Saturday, but you can drop by for a drink until 2 a.m. daily.
