Legendary Connecticut pizza chain Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, "the granddaddy of New Haven's pizza scene," according to Eater National's definitive guide, is — take a deep breath — expanding to Boston. A Craigslist post went up today seeking managers for "locations in Boston." That's right, plural.
Opened in 1925, the original Pepe's has expanded into a small chain with locations elsewhere in Connecticut and one in Yonkers, New York, totaling eight. Pepe's coal-fired pizza is beloved by many (and a source of fierce rivalries with rabid fans of Sally's and other New Haven pizzerias). The white clam pizza is Pepe's signature pie. No further information is known at this point regarding where or when Pepe's might open. Stay tuned.
UPDATE: A publicist for Pepe's confirms that while the chain is "actively pursuing various real estate opportunities in and around Boston...nothing has been signed, sealed or delivered" yet.
