Uphams Corner Restaurant May Be Revived With Smooth Jazz

Restaurant owner Steven Bingham is seeking a liquor license for his Dorchester property.

The former Ka-Carlos space (33 Hancock Street) in Dorchester's Uphams Corner could become a restaurant with a "wide-ranging" menu of "local food," as well as smooth jazz, according to the Dorchester Reporter. Steven Bingham has owned the space, which is near the Strand Theatre, since 2010 but ran into difficulties getting the proper permits to open a restaurant. He currently uses the space to prepare food for his two Roslindale daycare centers.

But now, he's hoping that the neighborhood will support his liquor license application and renewed plan to open a 120-seat restaurant there. He'd like to remain open until 11 p.m. and close on Sundays. While the plan is to serve alcohol, he's looking to cultivate a "relaxed atmosphere," not a place "with 20-30 people lined up" at the bar.

He's heard opposition from one abutter, according to the Dorchester Reporter, but other local community groups and businesses have expressed support.
