NYC-based burger chain Shake Shack quietly opened its second Massachusetts location just before Christmas, serving only desserts at first, but today is the super official shove-a-burger-in-your-face-at-11AM grand opening day, according to a press release from the cult favorite.
Last year, Shake Shack began rolling out fresh-cut fries across the chain, a departure from the frozen crinkle-cut fries that always disappointed even some of the most ardent fans of the restaurant. The new Harvard Square location will serve the fresh fries, which are twice-cooked and skin-on. If you're looking for the frozen variety, they're still served at Chestnut Hill, which will implement the fresh ones at a later date.
All Shake Shacks offer a few location-specific concretes (an unappetizing word for frozen custard with candy and other treats mixed in). Shake Shack Harvard Square will offer homages to nearby schools with a Crimson Red Velvet concrete (vanilla frozen custard blended with a slice of crimson red velvet cake from the South End Buttery) and MInT Chocolate (chocolate frozen custard blended with minted marshmallow sauce and chocolate truffle cookie dough). The location will also offer the special born at the older Chestnut Hill location, Lobstah Shell (vanilla frozen custard blended with a locally-sourced lobster tail pastry shell, strawberry purée, and ricotta cream). 5% of Lobstah Shell concrete sales will benefit Youth on Fire, a resource for homeless, runaway, and street-involved youth.
For the month of January, there's another local special: a Hasty Pudding milkshake (vanilla frozen custard hand-spun with banana and salted caramel sauce), in honor of the nearby legendary theatre troupe. Here's the full menu for Shake Shack Harvard Square. The restaurant is open 11am to 11pm daily at 92 Winthrop St., the former OM space.
