New Year's Eve was the final hurrah for the 31-year-old UpStairs on the Square (which had been located nearby and known as UpStairs at the Pudding for the first 20 years of its existence). The building housing the brightly-colored Harvard Square institution recently changed ownership, and restaurant owners Mary-Catherine Deibel and Deborah Hughes decided to call it a day at the end of 2013.
According to a newsletter sent by Deibel and Hughes, Deibel has accepted a position at Longy School of Music of Bard, right in the neighborhood, working on development and publicity. Hughes will take "a long nap and a date with a copy of British Vogue" before beginning to formulate a new, smaller venue, hopefully somewhere in Cambridge or Somerville and with some of UpStairs' staff. As for the building, Grendel's Den will live on downstairs, and a new restaurant will open upstairs, reportedly featuring a "French-trained chef from the United Kingdom."
