A 68-year-old North End standby and a cannoli destination for countless tourists, Mike's Pastry appears to be expanding across the river, Boston Restaurant Talk reports, based on a note on the city's website about a Board of Zoning Appeal Special Permit application for 11 Dunster St. The location is right by First Printer. In the permit application, lawyers for Mike's Pastry state that it "will meet a substantial community demand for a first-class Italian bakery" in Harvard Square, will be designed to be "compatible with the visual characteristics of the area," and is likely to draw mainly foot traffic rather than cars.

Michael Mercogliano, the "Mike" in Mike's Pastry, died at 90 just over a year ago, but the bakery marches on. It's a constant contender in pastry fans' debates over who makes the best cannoli in the North End, and now, it appears ready to enter the fray in Cambridge as well.
