A year ago, the Johnny D's team was working on opening an adjacent spot called Kindred. The plan back then was to offer hyper-local, vegetarian takeout breakfasts and lunches. Nothing materialized over the course of the year, and the "late 2012" opening came and went, but now Kindred signs have popped up in the windows of 11 Holland Street in Davis Square, next to Johnny D's, declaring that it is "coming soon!" Only this time, there's no mention of food — it's a "tea & tonic cafe."
The signs don't reveal much information — only that "our water knows no boundaries." The website notes that "it's all about the craft" and shares two drinks: tea tonic (white tea, grapefruit, mint, sparkling water, and stevia) and craft tonic (local strawberry, basil, apple cider vinegar, sparkling water, and turbinado sugar). Stay tuned for more information about Kindred's upcoming opening, and hit up the tipline if you've got any intel.
UPDATE: Johnny D's and Kindred owner Carla DeLellis tells Eater that there will indeed be food at Kindred — "light vegetarian meals via the amazing chefs from Cuisine en Locale." And the drinks will be made with "Somerville's fantastic water.
